Jenipapo painting
Project Type
Photography
Date
April 2023
These body paintings were originally used to protect themselves from insects and the Sun.
Over the centuries, painting has developed into different uses. As if to define which clan, which social rank the natives belong to. They allowed in times of war to impress opponents.
They could also show their social status, if they were in a relationship, single, ... During important passages, for example from little girl to woman, it represented their evolution.
Today, they use it a lot to symbolize the totem animals that will accompany them during ceremonies, and thus imitate this animal during the dance to receive its powers.
And from my experience, when I devoted myself to master plant diets, Jenipapo painting was used for protection against evil spirits. Because during the diet, you create a great opening to the Spirit World and you therefore become more accessible, which requires protection.
